Photosensitive Cartridge

A photosensitive cartridge, also known as a photosensitive drum or imaging drum, is a crucial component in laser printers and photocopiers. It is responsible for transferring the toner onto the paper to create the final printed or copied image.

The photosensitive cartridge consists of a cylindrical drum coated with a photosensitive material, typically made of organic compounds or selenium. This material is sensitive to light and electrical charges. When exposed to light, it becomes conductive and can hold an electrical charge.

The process begins when a laser beam scans across the surface of the photosensitive drum, creating an electrostatic image of the document or image to be printed. The laser selectively removes the electrical charge from certain areas of the drum, leaving behind a pattern of charged and uncharged areas.

Next, the toner, which is a fine powder made of pigments and plastic particles, is attracted to the charged areas on the drum. The toner is transferred from the drum onto the paper through a combination of heat and pressure. The paper is then passed through a fusing unit, where the toner is melted and permanently bonded to the paper.

After the toner is transferred, the photosensitive drum needs to be cleaned to remove any remaining toner particles. This is typically done using a cleaning blade or roller, which scrapes off the residual toner.

Over time, the photosensitive drum may wear out or become damaged, leading to print quality issues or errors. In such cases, the drum may need to be replaced or serviced by a professional technician.
