Ignition Distributor Cam

The ignition distributor cam, also known as the distributor rotor, is a component of the ignition system in a vehicle. It is located inside the distributor and is responsible for distributing the high voltage electrical current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs in the correct firing order.

The distributor cam is typically made of a durable material, such as plastic or metal, and is attached to the distributor shaft. As the distributor shaft rotates, the cam spins along with it. The cam has a series of lobes or contact points that correspond to each spark plug in the engine.

When the distributor cam rotates, it comes into contact with the distributor cap, which has metal contacts for each spark plug wire. As the cam makes contact with the distributor cap, it allows the high voltage current to pass through the appropriate spark plug wire and ignite the air-fuel mixture in the corresponding cylinder.

Over time, the distributor cam can wear down or become damaged due to the constant friction and electrical arcing. This can lead to misfires, poor engine performance, and even engine stalling. It is important to regularly inspect and replace the distributor cam if necessary to ensure proper ignition timing and reliable engine operation.
