Preload Indicating Washer
Item Name Code (INC) 42430
![]() |
An item round in shape having a centrally located hole. It consists of two concentric (inner and outer) steel rings, the inner ring is smaller in diameter and higher than the other. These rings are sandwiched between two close tolerance plain washers. As the assembly is tightened, the inner ring takes the load and is deformed until the loose outer ring is bound between the upper and lower plain washers and cannot be moved. The tightened load in the bolt is equal to the load required to compress the inner ring. When the binding of the outer ring occurs and can not be moved, it is a sign that the desired load has been reached.
Additional Information for Preload Indicating Washer
Preload Indicating Washers are a type of washer used in mechanical assemblies to ensure proper tension and preload in bolted joints. They are specifically designed to provide a visual indication of the amount of tension applied to the fastener.
These washers typically have a unique design, with a raised center section and a series of radial teeth or serrations on the outer edge. When the washer is compressed between the bolt head/nut and the mating surface, the raised center section flattens out, and the teeth or serrations grip the surfaces, preventing any loosening or rotation of the fastener.
The main purpose of Preload Indicating Washers is to maintain the desired tension in the bolted joint. By visually inspecting the washer, users can easily determine if the proper preload has been achieved. If the washer is flattened or compressed beyond a certain point, it indicates that the fastener has been properly tightened. On the other hand, if the washer is not compressed enough, it suggests that additional tightening is required.
These washers are commonly used in applications where maintaining proper tension is critical, such as in automotive, aerospace, and heavy machinery industries. They help prevent joint failure, reduce the risk of loosening, and ensure the longevity and reliability of the assembly.
In summary, Preload Indicating Washers are specialized washers that provide a visual indication of the tension applied to bolted joints. They are designed to maintain proper preload and prevent loosening in critical applications.
