Additional Information for Eosin Methylene Blue Agar Culture Medium
Eosin Methylene Blue Agar (EMB Agar) is a culture medium used in microbiology laboratories for the isolation and differentiation of gram-negative bacteria, particularly members of the Enterobacteriaceae family. It is commonly used for the detection and enumeration of coliform bacteria in water, food, and clinical samples.
EMB Agar contains the dyes eosin Y and methylene blue, which inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria and allow for the selective growth of gram-negative bacteria. The agar also contains lactose as a fermentable carbohydrate source.
When lactose-fermenting bacteria grow on EMB Agar, they produce acid, which causes the colonies to appear dark purple or black with a metallic sheen. Non-lactose fermenters, such as some species of Salmonella and Shigella, appear colorless or pale.
The EMB Agar culture medium is classified as an in vitro diagnostic substance, reagent, test kit, or set in the supply class In Vitro Diagnostic Substances, Reagents, Test Kits, and Sets. It falls under the supply group Medical, Dental, and Veterinary Equipment and Supplies, which includes various products used in healthcare settings.
Please note that EMB Agar should be used by trained professionals in a laboratory setting following appropriate safety protocols and guidelines.
