Items of footwear which are circular knitted, close-fitting elastic-type coverings for therapeutic treatment of the legs. They are designed to increase the linear velocity of blood flow in the veins by external compression of the legs. They help prevent thromboembolism by the use of graduated pressure which decreases from the instep to the thigh. They may be knee or thigh length and have transparent, open-toe, or a similar foot design to permit frequent inspection of the circularly condition. Federal Law (Public Law 94-295 May 28, 1976) restricts this device to, sale by, or use on, the order of a physician. Excludes conventional knitted seamless elastic stockings shaped by blocking methods.
Additional Information for Anti-Embolism Stockings
Anti-Embolism Stockings, also known as compression stockings or compression socks, are a type of medical garment that is designed to improve blood circulation in the legs and prevent the formation of blood clots. They are commonly used in medical settings, particularly for patients who are at risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or other circulatory problems.
These stockings are made from elastic materials that apply gentle pressure to the legs, helping to squeeze the veins and promote blood flow back to the heart. The compression provided by the stockings is graduated, meaning that it is strongest at the ankle and gradually decreases towards the top of the stocking. This design helps to prevent blood from pooling in the lower legs and reduces the risk of clot formation.
Anti-Embolism Stockings are available in different sizes and lengths to ensure a proper fit. They are typically prescribed by healthcare professionals and can be used in various medical situations, such as during surgery, bed rest, or prolonged periods of immobility. They are also commonly used by individuals who have a history of blood clots or who are at risk due to factors such as obesity, pregnancy, or long-distance travel.
It is important to note that Anti-Embolism Stockings should be worn as directed by a healthcare professional and fitted properly to ensure optimal effectiveness. They should be worn consistently and removed only for bathing or as advised by a healthcare provider.
