Cannon Equilibrator

Cannon Equilibrators, also known as Cannon-Manning Equilibrators, are devices used in fluid mechanics to measure pressure differences between two points in a fluid system. They are commonly used in flow measurement applications, such as in pipes, ducts, or channels.

The equilibrator consists of a U-shaped tube filled with a fluid, typically mercury or water. The two arms of the U-tube are connected to the two points in the fluid system where the pressure difference is to be measured. The pressure difference causes a displacement of the fluid in the U-tube, creating a height difference between the two arms.

By measuring the height difference of the fluid in the U-tube, the pressure difference between the two points can be determined using the principles of hydrostatics. This allows for accurate measurement of pressure differences in the fluid system.

Cannon Equilibrators are often used in conjunction with other instruments, such as manometers or pressure transducers, to convert the height difference into a readable pressure value. They are widely used in various industries, including HVAC, chemical processing, and oil and gas.

It is important to note that the use of mercury in Cannon Equilibrators may pose health and environmental risks due to its toxicity. Therefore, alternative fluids, such as water or oil, are often used as safer alternatives.
