Crossbar Telephone Switch
Item Name Code (INC) 21278
![]() |
An electromagnetically actuated switch in which contacts are closed between horizontal and vertical banks of conducting bars. It may be designed to find and hold the specific circuit from which the starting signal has originated, to choose an idle circuit and connect the incoming signal to it, to connect the trunk lines from another switch to the desired called station and/or perform other selective switching functions. Additional Information for Crossbar Telephone Switch
Crossbar Telephone Switches are a type of telephone switching equipment that falls under the supply class Telephone And Telegraph Equipment in the supply group Communication, Detection, And Coherent Radiation Equipment.
A Crossbar Telephone Switch is a mechanical device used in telecommunication networks to establish connections between telephone lines. It is called a "crossbar" switch because it uses a matrix of horizontal and vertical bars to make and break connections.
These switches were widely used in the mid-20th century and were an improvement over earlier technologies such as the Strowger switch. Crossbar switches were known for their reliability and ability to handle a large number of simultaneous calls.
The operation of a Crossbar Telephone Switch involves the use of electromechanical relays to control the movement of the crossbars. When a call is made, the switch determines the appropriate path for the call and connects the calling and receiving parties' telephone lines.
Crossbar Telephone Switches were an important part of the telephone infrastructure, allowing for efficient and reliable communication between telephone subscribers. However, with the advent of digital switching technologies, such as electronic and computer-controlled switches, crossbar switches have become less common.
Despite their declining usage, Crossbar Telephone Switches still hold historical significance in the development of telecommunication networks and are considered an important milestone in the evolution of telephone technology.
