INC 05311 Film Fixed Resistor
INC 05311 Film Fixed Resistor

A resistor whose ohmic value cannot be adjusted or varied. The resistance element consists of either a thin layer of conductive material, containing either binders or insulating materials, deposited on an insulated form; or an alloy of metal and ceramic materials, usually fused to an insulated form. Opposition to the flow of current is an inherent property of the materials used and is manifest by the heat dissipation in the resistor. See also ATTENUATOR, FIXED and RESISTOR, FIXED, COMPOSITION. Excludes carbon composition type resistors.

A fixed film resistor, also known as a metal film resistor, is a type of electronic component used to limit or control the flow of electric current in a circuit. It is called a fixed resistor because its resistance value is predetermined and cannot be adjusted.

Fixed film resistors are constructed by depositing a thin film of resistive material, typically made of metal alloys like nickel-chromium (NiCr) or tin oxide, onto a ceramic or metal substrate. The length, width, and thickness of the film determine the resistance value of the resistor.

The resistive film is then encapsulated in a protective coating, such as epoxy or flame-retardant material, to provide insulation and mechanical protection. The resistor is usually color-coded to indicate its resistance value according to the standard resistor color code.

Fixed film resistors offer several advantages over other types of resistors, such as carbon composition resistors. They have better stability over time and temperature, lower noise levels, and higher precision. They are also more resistant to moisture, humidity, and environmental factors.

When selecting a fixed film resistor, it is important to consider factors such as the required resistance value, power rating, tolerance, and voltage rating. These specifications should match the requirements of the circuit or device in which the resistor will be used.

Fixed film resistors are commonly used in various electronic applications, including voltage dividers, current limiting, signal conditioning, and impedance matching. They are widely available in different resistance values and power ratings to suit different circuit requirements.
