A transparent item consisting of prestressed pieces of glass, with straight parallel surfaces. Prestress results from heating up to fusing temperature followed by uniform quenching on both sides. Quick shrinking produces a high surface tension which only can be broken down by a heavy mechanical load. The shattered glass crumbles into spherical non-splintering pieces.
