An organic surface-active chemical which facilitates the wetting of a substance by virtue of its ability to lower the interfacial tension between a liquid and the material to be wetted. It may have cleansing properties by reason of its ability to wet, and to emulsify or disperse soil. It includes detergents, emulsifiers, penetrants and dispersing agents.
