A programmable electronic device that performs the dual function of an alarm control and a digital communicator. The alarm control monitors the output of sensors and/or detectors, and may activate warning devices such as bells, buzzers, horns, sirens, and/or lights. The communicator formats and transmits alarms and system status in a standard digital format over the public switched telephone network to a receiver at a remote monitoring station.
