Detroit Diesel 6V53T Engine for M551 Sheridan Tank
Model: 5063-5398
Aluminum Cylinder Block version of the 6V53T engine designed specifically to reduce weight for the M551 Sheridan Light Tank.
The original cast gray iron block of the 6V53T engine was deemed too heavy for the M551. The M551 required minimal weight to be able to traverse soft tropical landscapes.
The engine was designed based on the 5063-5393 6V53T engine with the block changed to aluminum material.
The torque rating of this detroit diesel engine required hardened steel bracing members to be installed to the cylinder block between the crankshaft main bearing journals for structural stability.
