REPLACE WIRE ROPE, HOOK, AND CHAIN (M548A1) — Continued REMOVAL WARNING Wear leather gloves when handling wire rope. Broken wires can rip your hands open. 1. Use helper to reel out wire rope (1) as far as it will go (see your -10). 2. Loosen screw (2). Pull wire rope from drum. 3. Remove nut (3) and bolt (4) from clevis (5). Remove hook and chain (6) from clevis. CLEANING 1. Check wire rope. See your FM 9-43-2 and FM 5-125 for wire rope wear criteria. Replace rope assembly if wires are broken or badly worn. Replace clevis or pin that is damaged. 2. Insert a 1/8 inch (3 mm) rod into inspection hole (7) in clevis. Replace wire rope assembly if rod can be inserted more than 3/4 inch (19 mm). 3.
