TM 9-2350-247-20-2 DRAIN/FILL COOLING SYSTEM (M548A3) — Continued 0214 00 FILL C A U T I O N Coolant must flow freely to help prevent overheating and engine damage. If rust, scale, or sediment prevent free flow of coolant, flush system per TB 750-651. This will be done only when needed. NOTE Coolant in the radiator, cylinder block, cylinderheads, oil cooler, coolant tubes, and hoses must flow freely. When rust, scale, or other sediment keeps the coolant from flowing freely, flush per TB 750-651. The procedure will be performed only as necessary and not as a routine maintenance procedure. NOTE System coolant capacity is 14 gallons (53 liters). Use antifreeze in system at all times to reduce corrosion in engine block and cooling system. Coolant provides high and low temperature protection. Coolant means the mixture of water and antifreeze. 1. Remove coolant filler cap (1). Add antifreeze and clean water mix based on protection chart label (on container). NOTE During initial fill add coolant slowly, especially the last few quarts (liters), to permit trapped air to escape. 2. Fill system slowly with 14 gallons (53 liters) of coolant. Bring coolant level to within 1/2 inch (13 mm) of bottom of filler neck (2). 3. Use antifreeze and battery tester or radiator test kit to check coolant for level of protection required for climate. 4. Install coolant filler cap (1) on filler neck (2). 0214 00-3
