TM 9-2350-247-20-2 FILL COOLING SYSTEM (M548A1) — Continued 0212 00 C A U T I O N Coolant must flow freely to help prevent overheating and engine damage. If rust, scale, or sediment prevent free flow of coolant, flush system per TB 750-651. This will be done only when needed. NOTE System coolant capacity is 9.5 gallons (36 liters). Use antifreeze in system at all times to reduce corrosion in engine block and cooling system. Coolant provides high and low temperature protection. Coolant means the mixture of water and antifreeze. 2. Remove radiator cap (1) from filler neck (2). Add antifreeze and clean water mix based on protection chart label (on container). NOTE During initial fill add coolant slowly, especially the last few quarts (liters), to permit trapped air to escape. 3. Fill system slowly with 9.5 gallons (36 liters) of coolant. Bring coolant level to within 1/2 inch (13mm) of bottom of filler neck (2). 4. Use antifreeze and battery tester or antifreeze test kit to check coolant for level of protection required for climate. 5. Install radiator cap (1) on filler neck (2). C A U T I O N Do not operate engine if temperature exceeds 230 F (110 C) or serious damage will occur. Stop engine and allow it to cool. 6. Start and run engine until it reaches 160 F to 200 F (71.1 C to 93.3 C) operating temperature. Check for leaks. 7. Stop engine and allow to cool. 0212 00-3
