TM 9-2350-247-10 MAINTENANCE OF AIR CLEANER ELEMENT (M548A1) — Continued 0063 00 CLEANING WARNING DO NOT clean the air cleaner element using gasoline or petroleum solvent. C A U T I O N Go easy so you don’t damage the element. Don’t hit or drop the element on its ends. NOTE You can clean the air cleaner element anytime by jarring it to knock dirt loose. If you don’t have to use the carrier for a few hours, you can wash the element with soap and water. You can blow the filter clean if you have access to compressed air. 1. Clean by jarring. a. To clean an open end element tap the fins gently with your hands, then tap the sides to knock dirt out. b. To clean a closed end element tap the sides gently with your hands. C A U T I O N Dry the air cleaner element before you put it back in the carrier. If you try to drive with a wet element, you’ll end up with an air cleaner full of mud and a carrier that won’t go. 2. Clean with soap and water. a. Wash the element with warm water and liquid soap. b. Make sure the element is dry before you put it back in the carrier. WARNING Air pressure in excess of 30 psi (207 kPa) can injure personnel. Do not direct pressurized air at yourself or others. Always wear goggles. 3. Clean with compressed air. a. To clean an open end element direct 100 psi (690 kPa) compressed air through the element from inside to outside, down the outside all around, and inside to outside again. b. To clean a closed end element direct 100 psi (690 Pa) compressed air through the element from inside to outside. 0063 00-2
