From the Vietnam War to the current Ukraine War, the M113 has served for over 60 years. The M113 was the first armored vehicle to have an Aluminum Alloy Hull. Biography of the M113 Biography of the M113

In 1956, the U.S. Army wanted a lighter APC, two models were developed. The T113 which was made of aluminum and T117 which was made of steel. The T113 was chosen and the M113 was produced. It was developed by FMC (Food Machinery Corporation) and was transferred to United Defense in 1994, who was bought out by BAE in 2005. In 1960, the M113s were introduced to the U.S. Army, with the first batch fielded in 1962, during the Vietnam War. They were used by the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN).

The M113 was the first U.S. Army vehicle made with aluminum armor making it much lighter than earlier vehicles. This meant it was able to be air transported by C-130 and C-141 transport planes. It was the most used armored vehicle in the Vietnam war, with the nickname “Green Dragon” due to its ability to break through the thickest parts of the jungle no matter the condition of the terrain. A main highlight was its amphibious characteristics using floats.

The aluminum made vehicle was only thick enough to protect the crew and passengers against small arms fire and shell fragments. Its intended purpose was a "battle taxi" designed to drive the soldiers to and from the battlefield, not to withstand frontline combat, with the ability to transport up to 11 soldiers. The original vehicle only required 2 crew members, a driver and a commander, who also manned the machine gun. In January 1963, during the Battle of Ap Bac, there were at least fourteen commanders who were shot and killed. This resulted in the first modifications for this vehicle. The ARVN originally used the hull of sunken ships for their shields, then decided to use stronger metal from scrapped armored vehicles. Later on, a new standardized shield was implemented on all ARVN mechanized units.

The ARVN ended up converting the original M113 (APC) to an Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle (ACAV), and was used mainly as a light amphibious tank. The U.S. Army adopted the ACAV into their fleet in 1965. They then began their own conversions to the model; which resulted in the M113 having over 40 different variants. In the U.S. Army, the M113 series have long been replaced as front-line combat vehicles by the M2 and M3 Bradley, but large numbers are still used in support roles such as armored ambulance, mortar carrier, engineer vehicle and a command vehicle. Army heavy brigade combat teams are still equipped with about 6,000 of various types of M113s.

The original production model was introduced in 1960. It is powered by a 209hp Chrysler 75M V8 gasoline engine with the ability to travel up to 200 miles (322km), at a max land speed up to 38mph (61km/h) and water speed up to 3.5mph (5.6km/h). The A1 series was introduced in 1964. This model replaced the gasoline version M113 because of the fire hazard in combat of gasoline. Powered by a 215hp (160 kW) 6V-53 Detroit Diesel engine and the ability to travel 300 miles (483 km) at a speed of 40mph on land (64km/h) and 3.5mph (5.6km/h) in water. The acceleration rate is approximately 0-20mph (31km/h) in 10.5secs.

The A2 series was introduced in 1979. This upgrade changed the location of the fan and radiator, resulting in improved engine cooling. Other improvements to the A2 series are adding; higher-strength torsion bars, which improved ground clearance, shock absorbers, which reduces the effects of ground strikes, and external armored fuel tanks on both sides of the rear ramp - external fuel protecting the crew from fire in combat. The acceleration rate is approximately 0-20mph (31km/h) in 11secs. It has the ability to travel 300 miles (483 km) and a max speed of 40mph on land (64km/h) and water speed 3.5mph (5.6km/h).

The A3 series was introduced in 1987. The engine was upgraded to a 275hp turbocharged Detroit Diesel Turbo Diesel 6V53T. In addition, the upgrade also includes a new transmission, new driving controls (power brakes and standard steering controls) and an installation of an external armor kit. The acceleration rate is approximately 0-20mph (31km/h) in 7.8secs with a max land speed of 41mph (64kph) and 3.6mph (5.8kph) in water.

The A3 generation of the M113 family of vehicles was a major and comprehensive upgrade for the entire range of M113 variants within the M113 Family. The upgrade increased the overall performance of the US Army's M113 fleet, which was the workhorse of its armored forces in the 1980s (over 20,000 M113s and its variants were in US service then). The M113A3 upgrade was a significant improvement over the M113A2, which was the most common variant in US service at the time. The M113A3 upgrade was a comprehensive upgrade that included a new engine, transmission, and a new external armor kit.

The M113A3 engine was upgraded to a 275hp turbocharged Detroit Diesel Turbo Diesel 6V53T.

The M113A3 transmission was upgraded to a new Allison X200-4A 4-speed automatic transmission.

M113A4 Family M113A4 Family

The A4 generation of the M113 family of vehicles is a major upgrade for the M113 variants. The M113A4 was developed by BAE Systems for the US Army addressing the areas of capability and mobility. An upgraded powerpack with an aftercooled 350hp Detroit Diesel 6V53TA engine. A variable speed hydraulically driven cooling fan was added to the engine. Capability was improved by extending the length of the vehicle.

Other entities have also developed their own M113A4 upgrades. The most prevalent of these is the M113A4+ upgrade developed by the Turkish company FNSS.

Detroit Diesel 6V53 and 6V53 Two-Stroke Engine Oil

Vehicles from the M113 Family powered by the Detroit Diesel 6V53 Family of engines required critical attention to the lubrication oil used in the engine. Over the many decades that the 6V53, 6V53N and 6V53T engines that can power the M113, Detroit Diesel, the US Army and NATO have regularly updated the specification of the engine oil to be used. The Oil Manufacturers have also developed new products and new standards during this time for the available oils. The Technical Manuals (TMs) for the M113 and 6V53 Engines have been changed several times with the engine oil specification and these manuals are not synchronous in their recommendation. To make matters worse, different operating users have also adopted different standards.

The engine oil for a M113 vehicle is critical because the detroit diesel two-stroke engine is a high-rpm design with "loose" clearances on its internal moving parts. Further, the engine is susceptible to very and very high ambient temperatures. Engines operating in ambient temperatures above 90F can be likely to fail when the engine oil is not optimized for the engine. The original manufacturer (OEM) Detroit Diesel have developed their own specification of oil particularly for their two-stroke diesel engines.

MTU states that for 53 Series Engines such as the 6V53, that Single-Grade SAE 40 Oil is recommended for all temperatures. Single-Grade SAE 50 Oil and Multi-Grade 15W-40 Oil may be used, but only for SHORT PERIODS in cold conditions and NOT in hot conditions when the coolant outlet temperature is more than 94 Celsius (201 F).

US Army and NATO Specifications from Technical Manuals

There are many Technical Publications from the US Army and NATO for the M113 Family of vehicles and within those publications and their various editions (changes) there are multiple specifications for engine oil. In fact, none of these manuals match the OEM's recommendations, but here is a curated list of specifications from the latest editions of the manuals.

Our Opinion on 6V53 Engine Oil for the M113 Series

After exhaustive testing of engines in our computerized test dyno cells and evaluation of engine cores that we have received over the years for rebuilding, we can conclude that the MTU Specifications are correct. Single-Grade 40 Weight (40W) oil provides the best performance, fuel-economy and reliability on Detroit Diesel 53 Series Engines.

The only exception being when a vehicle is operated for extended periods below -18C (0F) where the engine coolant outlet temperature rarely rises above 165F. 30W Oil does optimize oil pressure and flow rates at extremely low artic temperatures. Oil Change frequency must also increase in cold conditions as the oil will absorb moisture and not evaporate the moisture when its temperature is below the boiling point of water, 100C (212F). The oil sump heater kit can be installed on the M113 to pre-heat the oil to minimize water absorption during storage and maximize moisture evaporation during cold weather running.

While MIL-PRF-46167 compliant Single-Grade oils offer the same performance as the commercial brand products recommended by MTU, the MTU Approved commercial brands do run cleaner within the engine over extended periods with improved moisture rejection and reduced tarnish, varnish and sludging than MIL-PRF-46167 oil.

The engines should be inspected to ensure that the correct thermostat is installed according to the latest OEM Specifications. For example, the 5063-5299 6V53N Normally-Aspirated Engine ( 2815-00-124-5390 / 2815-01-295-7458 ) of the M113A1 and M113A2 and the 5063-5396 6V53T Turbocharged Engine ( 2815-01-045-9420) should have thermostat part number 23503828 installed with an opening temperature of 165F. The 5063-5393 6V53T Turbo Engine (2815-01-248-7644) used on early M113A3 and the 5063-539L 6V53T Turbo Engine (2815-01-412-2715) used on later M113A3 and updated M113A3 should have a thermostat part number 23503825 installed with an opening temperature of 180F.
