Assembly INITIAL SETUP Applicable Configuration M109A2/M109A3 howitzers Tools Artillery and turret mechanic’ s tool kit (SC 5180-95-CL-A12) Materials/Parts Filter element kit (item 134, Appx E) Hydraulic fluid (item 22, Appx B) Lockwashers (2) (item 158, Appx E) Retaining rings (2) (item 22, Appx E) Personnel Required 2 Equipment Condition Filter assembly removed (para 6-1) a. Disassembly 1 Remove retaining ring (1) at top end of fluid filter assembly (2) and discard. 2 Remove and discard filter assembly element (3) and preformed packing (4). 3 Remove retaining ring (5) at pump end of fluid filter assembly (2) and discard. 4 Remove head and ball check valve group (6) from filter body (7). 5 Remove preformed packing (8) from fluid filter head (9) and discard. 6 Remove two cap screws (10), two lockwashers (11), and fluid restrictor (12) from fluid filter head (9). Discard lockwashers. 7 Remove helical compression spring (13), power pack guide (14), and bearing ball (15) from fluid filter head (9). b. Inspection 1 Inspect filter body (7) and replace if distorted or cracked. 2 Inspect helical compression spring (13) and replace if distorted, cracked, scratched, or damaged. 3 Inspect fluid filter head (9) and replace if cracked, distorted, or damaged. 6-20
