PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CHECKS AND SERVICES FOR M109 SELF-PROPELLED HOWITZER — CONTINUED Location Item to Check/ Service Fan (Radiator) Torsion Bars Crewmember Procedure DRIVER To prevent injury or death to personnel, keep hands and loose clothing away from fans when engine is running. a. b. c. d. Open air intake grille and transmission access doors. Check for coolant leaks and serviceability of hoses. Inspect fans (1) for missing or damaged impel- lers. Damage includes cracked, chipped, or bro- ken impellers. If impellers are damaged, notify unit maintenance. Start engine, Check for oil leaks at fan drive. Check that both fans (1) are turning. If both fans are not turning, shut down engine and notify unit maintenance. Not Fully Mission Capable If: Class Ill leak is found. Fan (1) impellers are missing, cracked, chipped, or broken. Either fan (1) does not turn when engine is running. DRIVER Check for broken torsion bars by prying up road wheel. Any torsion bar is broken or mis- sing. 2-70
