CHAPTER 3 ENGINE BDAR FIXES SHALL BE USED ONLY IN COMBAT AT THE DISCRETION OF THE COMMANDER AND SHALL BE REPAIRED BY STANDARD MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE AFTER THE MISSION IS COMPLETED. The M 109 Self-Propelled Howitzer/M 110 series Self-Propelled Howitzer/M578 Recovery Vehicle is powered by a V-8, liquid cooled, two cycle, turbosupercharged, diesel engine, 8V71T. Engine damage can be detected by several different method. (1) Abnormal oil pressure, temperature readings or warning lights, (2) Abnormal noises, (3) Abnormal amounts or coloration of exhaust smoke, (4) Sudden loss of power or excessive fuel consumption. b.
