25 August 1988 TM 55-2320-280-14 CHAPTER 3 SAFETY 3-1. General General safety considerations and precautions for handling and movement of the HMMWVs are as follows. a. The entire vehicle must be checked to ensure that all loose items are properly secured to prevent dam- age during shipment. b. A ground guide must be used when the vehicle is backed or moved in a confined area. c. Other operational safety precautions are outlined in the operator's manual. WARNING Fire extinguishers must be readily available during all loading and unloading operations. WARNING If the vehicle is operated during loading and unloading, proper ventilation must be provided. Prolonged inhalation of exhaust fumes could be fatal. WARNING Personnel shall not stand or walk under the vehicle when it is being lifted. WARNING Personnel shall not stand between vehicles when ground-guiding vehicle operators during loading and unloading operations. d. Vehicles should not exceed 3 mph while on loading ramps, on railcars, or inside aircraft. 3-2.
