HMMWV, also known or confused as Humvee, H1 and Hummer is a 4x4 general utility military vehicle introduced in 1984. With over 280,000 units produced, the HMMWV is in active service with over 70 countries. As of 2015, the production of new HMMWV was been reduced to limited numbers, but an active industry for HMMWV Upgrades emerged to enable new roles and extended life-expectancy for this widely-used vehicle.

The high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) is a tactical vehicle which was originally produced for the US Army. It was designed as the replacement for the US Army’s tactical vehicles in the ¼t to 1¼t range.

The original M998 A0 series of HMMWV Mission Variants were upgraded to A1 shortly after introduction. The A2 series was introduced with a 6.5L Diesel Engine and a 4-speed transmission. In 2006, the Reliability Extended HMMWVs were launched with upgraded cooling, suspension and brakes. The latest HMMWVs are the ECV (Extended Capacity Vehicle) which could carry significant armor and payloads. Powered by a Turbocharged 6.5L Diesel Engine, the ECV series was the most widely manufactured.

Biography of the HMMWV Biography of the HMMWV

The Humvee has largely replaced utility vehicles such as the Jeep, M151, M561 and the CUCV. Widely used by the United States Military, the HMMWV has found uses in civil protection and well as in civilian roles as the Hummer H1. The HMMWV's mission was to provide a light tactical vehicle for command and control, special purpose shelter carriers, and special purpose weapons platforms throughout all areas of the modern battlefield. The HMMWV had to meet the same specs as the Bradley's and M1 tanks. The 16" ground clearance, 60% grade, 40% side slope, 18" vertical step, 30" fording without preparation, etc. are the military's mobility requirements for all combat vehicles, including the HMMWV. On March 22, 1983, the Army ordered 55,000 HMMWVs for $1.2 billion. They were to be delivered over a 5 year period with 15 different configurations. The Army increased the orders to 70,000 vehicles. In 1989, AM General received another 5 year contract for 33,000 more. The HMMWV was originally produced in 15 configurations to support weapons systems, command and control systems, field ambulances, and ammunition, troop and general cargo transport.

AM General is the designated manufacturer of the HMMWV. AM General submitted their prototype in 1979 where their design relied heavily on the chassis components from the AMC Eagle Wagon, GMC K Pickup Truck and the Dodge W200 civilian vehicles and still maintain many of these original components to date.

With many variants, upgrades and series along the way, the final production HMMWVs were armored and equipped with an engine developed from the original GM 6.2L Diesel, the General Engine Products (GEP) 6500, a 6.5L Turbo V8 Diesel.

HMMWV M966

M966 - TOW Carrier, Armored
High Mobility Military Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV)
NSN 2320-01-107-7153

HMMWV with four hard doors and a metal roof. The rear can be covered by a composite slant or square back to store 6 extra missiles. The doors are made of a fiberglass reinforced with a fibrous composite fitted with operable polycarbonate windows. The hood vents have baffles to prevent spall from damaging the engine. The windshield is bullet resistant. The tires use the runflat system. Contrary to popular belief, TOW carriers are only spall resistant and cannot withstand direct small arms fire. The roof has a hatch with a rotating circular weapons mounting ring and a TOW mount providing a 360 degree field of fire. TOW stands for Tube launched, Optically sighted, Wire guided. The operator uses the optical sight for targeting. The missile is launched from a tube, spooling out wires as it flies. The wires allow the operator to steer the missile in flight. Hence, as long as the operator tracks a target, the missile will follow. The TOW missile's shaped charge warhead is able to defeat all armor. The TOW gives infantry higher lethality against armor than the personal LAW with great mobility. The TOW launcher can be dismounted from the vehicle. M966s can also be deployed as AT teams. GVW of 8,200 lbs.

HMMWV M1121

M1121 - Up-Armored TOW Carrier
High Mobility Military Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV)
NSN 2320-01-956-1282

M1121 TOW Carriers are converted M966 TOW Carriers. There were never any M1121 TOW Carriers produced as new vehicles. The M966 TOW Carriers were converted based on a Modification Work Order MWO-9-2320-923-50-1 Modification Of The Improved Target Acquisition System (ITAS) High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) M966.

In short, the electrical system of the M966 TOW Carrier was not sufficient to provide the power requirements for the TOW ITAS system. As a result, the M1121 modification program was implemented which upgraded the electrical system in an M966 TOW Carrier. Once the modification was completed, the M966 that was modified received a new Data Plate and became an M1121 TOW Carrier.

Weapon station azimuth was limited to 300 degrees left and right of vehicle centerline when Vehicle Power Conditioner (VPC) cables were connected. With launcher installed, elevation was limited to 20 degrees and depression was limited to 10 degrees.

When fitted with any of a variety of add-on armor packages as part of near-term armor programs, beginning in 2003, M1121s were designated as M1121P1s.

HMMWV M1167

M1167 - ECV TOW/ITAS Carrier With IAP Armor Ready High Mobility Military Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV)
NSN 2320-01-544-9638

The M1167 HMMWV is the TOW missile carrier variant of the M1151A1/B1 HMMWV. The M1151P1 HMMWV was used as the basis for the M1167 ITAS/TOW HMMWV. The M1167 consists of the M1025A2 body; a full armor package known as the Integrated Armor Package (IAP) with B1 kit; an air conditioning system; and the M1113 Expanded Capacity Vehicle (ECV) heavy chassis. The vehicle is equipped with the ITAS/TOW missile launcher mounted on the roof of the vehicle with the TOW Gunner Protection Kit (TGPK), Far Target Locator (FTL), six TOW missiles, a secondary weapon, lithium batteries (to meet the dismounted requirements of the ITAS/TOW), a battery charging device and a cargo bed missile rack. The TGPK (TOW Gunner Protection Kit) allows for full use of the ITAS with secondary weapons and allows TOW missile firing. It provides better protection with no open holes in the TGPK unit and has a rear back shield that can fold down. The design of the TGPK is based on a U.S. Marine Corps design as used in the M1114 HMMWV. The M1167 is used to transport and launch TOW missiles to defeat field fortified positions, Reinforced Urban Structures, and Main Battle Tanks. The weapons platform can be traversed 360 degrees and the launcher elevated to 20 degrees and depressed 10 degrees. The major components on the M1167 that are different from the M1151A1/B1 are the items added for the operation of the ITAS/TOW and described above. The M1167 HMMWV serves as a weapons platform for the Close Combat Missile System – Heavy (currently known as the ITAS/TOW). The M1167 HMMWV provides an anti-tank, anti-material, and anti-structure operational capability that allows the Infantry Battalion to concentrate on decisive maneuvers by dismounted Infantry. It represents the primary precision close combat missile capability of the Infantry Battalion, capable of defeating any armored threat out to extended ranges. The M1167 provides protection for the force by use of its precision long-range missile capability to destroy enemy armor and material beyond the effective range of enemy weapons. This capability significantly enhances the Infantry Battalions and Reconnaissance Squadron’s flexibility and versatility across the range of military operations. The M1167 mounts only one primary weapon, be it either an ITAS/TOW missile/launcher, an M2 0.50-caliber or a MK19 40mm and is capable of mounting one secondary weapon, either a M240 or M249 squad automatic weapon, at the same time. GVW of 13,100 lb (5,942 kg).

The M1167 Tube-Launched, Optical-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missile variant replaced the M1045A2 and the M1046 HMMWV variants. It provides ground mobility for the TOW or SABER missile system giving commanders a more flexible and time sensitive, medium to long range, anti-armor capability.
