A WDZ encompasses the ground and airspace for lateral and vertical containment of projectiles, fragments, debris, and components resulting from the firing, launching, and detonation of aviation-delivered ordnance. It reflects the minimum land and air requirement, to include terrain mitigation, needed to safely employ a given weapon. The WDZ accounts for inaccuracy, failures, ricochets, and broaching/porpoising of a specific weapon/munition type delivered by a specific aircraft type. The WDZ "footprint" is based on weapon characteristics, type of delivery being executed, platform (aircraft) delivering the ordnance, target and soil characteris- tics, terrain, and level of containment acceptable to the senior commander (Army)/installation commander (Marine Corps).
