The avoirdupois system of weights is used for pounds, ounces, and drams except when specified. The avoirdupois system is the everyday system of weights commonly used in the U.S. where 16 ounces = 1 pound and 16 drams = 1 ounce. It is considered more modern and standardized than the alternative troy or apothecary system. 2. The U.S. gallon is a different size than the UK gallon, so no liquid measures of the same name are the same size in the U.S. and UK systems.
