18 June 2020 ATP 4-90 v Preface ATP 4-90, Brigade Support Battalion, provides doctrinal guidance for the employment of support battalions in brigade combat teams and multifunctional support brigades providing sustainment support to large-scale combat operations. It describes the role, characteristics, core competencies, and functions of these battalions, which normally includes a headquarters and headquarters company, distribution company, field maintenance company, brigade support medical company, and forward support companies. The principal audience for ATP 4-90 is commanders and staffs assigned to brigade support battalions, brigade combat teams, and multifunctional support brigades. It is applicable to other operational and sustainment organizations in tactical and operational environments. Trainers and educators throughout the Army will also use this publication. Commanders, staffs, and subordinates ensure their decisions and actions comply with applicable United States, international, and, in some cases, host nation laws and regulations. Commanders at all levels ensure that their Soldiers operate in accordance with the law of war and the rules of engagement. (See FM 6-27, The Commander’s Handbook on the Law of Land Warfare.) ATP 4-90 uses joint terms where applicable. Select joint and Army terms and definitions appear in both the glossary and the text. For definitions shown in the text, the term is italicized and the number and name of the proponent publication follows the definition. This publication is not the proponent for any new Army terms. ATP 4-90 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard/Army National Guard of the United States, and the United States Army Reserve unless otherwise noted. The proponent of ATP 4-90 is the United States Army Combined Arms Support Command.
