TM 9-2320-366-34-1 1-8. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION OF MAJOR COMPONENTS Refer to TM 9-2320-366-10-1 for location and description of major components. 1-9. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MODELS Refer to TM 9-2320-366-10-1 for differences between models. Section III. PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION 1-10. POWERTRAIN Figure 1-12. Powertrain Power for the vehicle is provided by a diesel engine (1, Figure 1-12) which is coupled directly to an automatic transmission (2). Power from the automatic transmission is transferred to the transfer case (3) and on to the front steering and rear drive axles (4, 5, and 6) through a series of drive shafts and universal joints. The vehicle drive train is enhanced by the use of an electronically controlled seven-speed transmission. The primary components of the Allison MD3070PT transmission consist of either a WTEC II Transmission Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Pushbutton Shift Selector (WTEC II TEPSS) or a WTEC III Transmission Pushbutton Shift Selector (WTEC III TPSS) coupled with a WTEC III transmission ECU; a control module located directly beneath the transmission main housing; a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) which detects the percentage of throttle being used; engine, turbine, and output speed sensors which, in combination with each other, send information to the ECU to provide the smoothest possible shifting and allow the ECU to monitor overall transmission performance. 1-15
