Check for loose or cracked mounting hardware on alternator bracket and alternator pulley. b. Check idler pulley for dents, nicks, and cuts in flanges. Check alternator drive belts for cracks, frays, and shiny spots. Pulley is damaged to the point that it affects belt wear. a. Alternator bracket or idler pulley is cracked or loose. b. Pulley is damaged to the point that it affects belt wear. Any drive belt has more than one crack 1/8 in. (3 mm) in depth or 50 percent of belt thickness, any fray more than 2 in. (51 mm) long, or has excessive play.
