It is applied to an item pecu- liar to the equipment which, because of probable discontin- uance or shutdown of produc- tion facilities, would prove uneconomical to reproduce at a later time. An item of a depot overhaul/re- pair kit and not purchased separately. Depot kit defined as a kit that provides items required at the time of over- haul or repair. An item of a maintenance kit and not purchased separately. Maintenance kit defined as a kit that provides an item that can be replaced at organi- zational or intermediate levels of maintenance. Item included in both a depot overhaul/repair kit and a maintenance kit. Item to be manufactured or fab- ricated at organizational level . A support item that is not stocked. When required, item will be procured through normal supply channels. NOTE Cannibalization or salvage may be used as a source of supply for any items coded above except those coded XA. (2) Maintenance Code. Main- tenance codes are assigned to indicate the levels of maintenance authorized to USE and REPAIR support items. The maintenance codes are entered in the third and fourth positions of the Uni- form SMR Code format as follows: (a) The maintenance code en- tered in the third position will indi- cate the lowest maintenance level auth- orized to remove, replace, and use the support item. The maintenance code entered in the third position will indi- cate one of the following levels of maintenance: Code Application/Explanation C Crew or operator maintenance performed within organizational maintenance.
