TM 9-2815-220-24 ENGINE ABNORMAL EXHAUST 0016 00 MALFUNCTION 1: (Continued) Excessive black smoke (one or both banks). PROCEDURE OBSERVATION ANALYSIS Engine speed 1800-1950 rpm. Engine power is normal. Engine speed below 1800 rpm. Power is below normal. Air Cleaners (Continued) Repeat the preceding step, but operate engine for 30 seconds (maximum). Engine speed above 1950 rpm. Transmission is slipping or fuel injection pump is out of adjustment. Normal engine speed (1800-1950 rpm). Air cleaner elements satisfactory. Speed below normal. Proceed to next step. Open doors, remove elements, clean element chamber and close doors. Repeat stall test. If engine speed increases from speed obtained previously to normal speed. The elements are dirty. PROBABLE CAUSE CORRECTIVE ACTION b. (Continued) Air cleaner restriction (element dirty, wet or blower motor inoperative). (2) Service filter (clean, dry or replace). Refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual. c. Air cleaner hose collapsed. (1) Inspect, repair or replace (refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual). d. Turbocharger air inlet blocked with plastic plug, tape, rag, or other debris (usually one bank only). (1) Inspect and clean (refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual). e. Turbocharger compressor housing clamp. (1) Tighten or replace clamp. f. Turbocharger defective (sticky, worn or failed bearings, seals and damaged impeller). (1) Remove inlet elbows (refer to pertinent vehicle technical manual) and check for bearing play or looseness, impeller damage, or excessive carbon deposits on turbine wheel. Replace defective turbocharger (WP 009, Turbocharger Assembly Replacement (2CA & 2DA) or WP 0100 for 2DR). g. Exhaust manifold leak (loose flange, failed gasket, cracked or damaged manifold or elbow). (1) Inspect exhaust manifold for leaks and repair as required (WP 0107, Exhaust Manifolds and Associated Parts Replacement). WP 0016 00-2
