NMWR 9-2815-220 GENERAL MAINTENANCE, OVERHAUL, AND REPAIR PROCEDURES—Continued 0005 00 SPECIAL PROCESSES 1. Special processes and equipment required for overhaul operations, are defined or referenced at the point of their application. When special processes listed below are required, the overhaul activity (when requested) shall provide evidence of compliance with manufacturing specifications or applicable MIL specification. 2. Phosphate Coating. a. TT-C-490E, Type I, light phosphate coating for ferrous metals as a paint base only. b. MIL-DTL-16232G, heavy phosphate coating to be used on ferrous metal for corrosion protection when paint will not be applied. 3. Chemical Conversion Films for Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys. MIL-C-5541E, Type I to be used as a touchup for damaged anodic coating. MIL-A-8625F(1), for aluminum and aluminum alloys, or as a paint base. MIL-C- 5541E is not suitable for interiors of oil-filled castings. 4. Anodic Coating for Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys. MIL-A-8625F(1), to be used as specified by part drawings. 5. Liquid Penetrant Inspection. ASTM-E-1417, fluorescent or visible dye used to detect cracks, flaws, etc., open to the surface of any nonporous metal. 6. Magnetic Particle Inspection. ASTM-E-1444, used to detect cracks, etc., at or below the surface of ferrous (ferromagnetic) metals. 7. Other Special Processes. Parts beyond wear limit tolerances, broken, cracked, or otherwise damaged, may be considered for repair by special processes listed below by requesting approval of Research and Engineering, TACOM. In requesting approval, the overhaul activity will furnish: a. Written repair procedure b. Specifications covering the procedure c. Referenced drawing d. Samples (when requested) of parts repaired by the applicable process listed below. (1) Chrome plate, Class 2, SAE-AMS-QQ-C-320, 0.002-0.015 inch thick after finish-machining to print dimensions and surface finish specified, may be used to repair damaged surfaces. (2) Electroless nickel plating per SAE- AMS 2404E or SAE AMS-C-26074 may be used to correct undersize or oversize condition. After plating, parts must meet print dimensions and surface finish specified. (3) It is permissible to impregnate structurally sound castings with porosity (including microporosity) that may weep or sweat under hydrostatic or aerostatic pressure. (a) MIL-I-13857B(2), Type I, impregnation of steel or cast iron casting. (b) MIL-STD-276A, impregnation of aluminum alloy and magnesium alloy castings. 0005 00-12 Change 1
