NMWR 9-2815-220 GENERAL MAINTENANCE, OVERHAUL, AND REPAIR PROCEDURES—Continued 0005 00 REMOVAL OF MAJOR ASSEMBLIES 1. Instructions for removal of the major components from engine assemblies are contained in TM 9-2815-220- 34. 2. Use caution in handling parts during disassembly. Careless handling may cause subsequent failure of equipment. DISASSEMBLY 1. This section contains instructions to disassemble major assemblies into subassemblies, components, and parts as required to overhaul; and instructions to clean and inspect each item removed during the engine disassembly process. 2. Equipment as listed in WP 0051 00 must be available prior to disassembly. 3. Dispose of all safety locking devices, such as lockwire, cotter pins, springs, and retaining rings. Replace all gaskets. See Mandatory Replacement Parts, WP 0052 00. 4. Disassembly will not be based on the result of preshop analysis, therefore a thorough visual and mechanical inspection will be performed on all items and components. 5. Components will be disassembled into subassemblies as outlined in TM 9-2815-220-34. CLEANING 1. General. The procedures for cleaning will generally be the same for most of the engine parts. Any cleaning procedures which are peculiar to a specific part of component are covered in the paragraph relating to that item. Refer to AMC Pam 702-15 and 702-20 for additional information pertaining to cleaning. 2. Cleaning Instructions. Care must be exercised in all cleaning operations. The presence of dirt or foreign material is harmful to proper engine operation and maintenance. a. All parts must be thoroughly cleaned and kept clean throughout the overhaul process. NOTE Establish proper controls or identification to maintain relationship of matched parts. b. Protection of mating surface is important during cleaning to prevent damage or marring of critical areas. WARNING Solvents can burn easily, can give off harmful vapors and are harmful to skin and clothing. Wear protective goggles and gloves and don’t breathe vapors, to avoid injury or death, keep away from open fire and use in a well ventilated area. If cleaning solvent gets on skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water. WARNING Compressed air used for cleaning purposes will not exceed 30 psi. Use only with effective chip guarding and personnel protective equipment (goggles/shield, gloves, etc.) 0005 00-10 Change 1
