NMWR 9-2815-220 PRESHOP INSPECTION 0003 00 PURPOSE 1. The purpose of the preshop inspection is to determine, prior to beginning overhaul activities, the extent of overhaul required to return the engine to NMP overhaul standards. 2. An engine assembly is considered economically repairable when the estimated cost of repair does not exceed the maximum expenditure limit for the assembly (see TB 750-98-24). UNPACKING WARNING The engine assembly weighs approximately 5000 lb (2267.9 kg). Use an appropriate lifting device with a weight capacity greater than the engine assembly when lifting or moving the engine. 1. When required to unpack the engine assembly, caution must be exercised when lifting equipment is necessary. There are no special instructions required. Do not remove tags or forms until actual overhaul is begun. REVIEW OF RECORDS AND DATA 1. Physically check all tags and forms attached to the equipment to determine the reason for its removal from service and other discrepancies. Do not remove attached tags or forms until actual overhaul is begun. PRELIMINARY CLEANING 1. Cleanliness is essential in all overhaul operations. Dirt and dust, even in minute quantities, are abrasive. Precision-lapped surfaces of rotating parts must be protected from dust and dirt at all times. Be sure parts are cleaned as specified and be sure they are kept clean. Do not handle parts with greasy hands. Dusty and grimy clothing must not be worn. WARNING Solvents can burn easily, can give off harmful vapors, and are harmful to skin and clothing. Wear protective goggles and gloves and don’t breathe vapors, to avoid injury or death, keep away from open fire and use in well ventilated area. If solvent gets on skin or clothing, wash immediately with soap and water. 2. Cover all openings of the engine with tape or other suitable materials and thoroughly clean all external parts and other surfaces. Make sure that no foreign matter enters working parts. External surfaces of engine may be steam cleaned. Remove grease and oil with cleaning compound solvent or mineral spirits applied with a stiff brush. 3. Ensure that all openings are covered to prevent entry of water or other contaminants. 4. Apply a light coat of preservative oil, MIL-PRF-21260E, type I, Grade 10, to all bare metal surfaces. NOTE Vapor-degreased and steam cleaned parts must be treated immediately to prevent rust. 0003 00-1
