Biography of the Bradley
The M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV), named after General Omar Bradley, is a cornerstone of the United States Army's mechanized infantry and armored cavalry units. Designed by FMC Corporation (now BAE Systems Land & Armaments) during the Cold War, the Bradley entered service in 1981 to counter the Soviet BMP series of infantry fighting vehicles.
The Bradley boasts a unique aluminum hull design that balances weight for amphibious capabilities with armor protection against small arms fire and artillery shrapnel. The drivetrain features a Cummins VTA-903T diesel engine delivering 600 horsepower, propelling the 25-ton vehicle to a respectable 41 mph on land. The suspension system allows for excellent off-road maneuverability, keeping pace with the M1 Abrams main battle tank.
Firepower is a key aspect of the Bradley. The M242 Bushmaster 25mm chain gun delivers a devastating hail of fire against infantry and lightly armored vehicles. Complementing this is a TOW launcher mounted on the turret, capable of firing powerful anti-tank missiles effective against heavily armored targets at extended ranges. A 7.62mm M240C machine gun provides additional suppressive fire.
The crew compartment accommodates a three-man crew: a driver, a gunner, and a commander. The remaining troop compartment can house a six-man infantry squad, who can fight from within the vehicle through protected firing ports using their own rifles, or dismount to engage in close-quarters combat.
Over its long service history, the Bradley has undergone numerous upgrades to maintain effectiveness. The M2A3 and M3A3 variants boast improved armor packages, digitized electronics for enhanced battlefield awareness, and mine plow attachments for urban warfare scenarios. The Bradley remains a vital component of the U.S. Army's armored formations, slated for further modernization programs to ensure its continued relevance on the battlefield.

M6 Linebacker: U.S. short-lived air defense variant (1997-2006). Converted from Bradleys, it swapped the TOW launcher for Stinger missiles to defend against low-flying aircraft and drones. Ultimately, the Army found other solutions and phased them out.

Bradley Engineer Squad Vehicle

The Bradley Engineer Squad Vehicle (ESV) was a proposed upgrade concept, not a deployed vehicle. It aimed to replace the M113 with a modified Bradley chassis for engineer squads. This would have offered them better mobility, protection, and space for equipment compared to the M113. However, the ESV never went into production by the U.S. Army.
Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle

The BAE AMPV is the U.S. Army's chosen replacement for the Vietnam-era M113 personnel carrier. Built on a modified Bradley chassis but without a turret, the AMPV boasts significant improvements. It offers increased cargo space for troops and equipment, along with enhanced armor for better protection. A V-shaped hull improves blast resistance, while modular roofs allow for mission-specific configurations. The AMPV is also designed to be cost-effective. BAE can produce them quickly due to shared manufacturing lines with the Bradley, and the lack of a turret keeps operating costs lower than the Bradley itself. With more internal space and upgraded electrical systems, the AMPV is well-suited for modern battlefields. Having already reached its first unit deployment in 2023, the AMPV is poised to be a mainstay in the U.S. Army for years to come.
The M2 Bradley IFV Family
The M2 Bradley IFV comprises five variants: the M2, M2A1, M2A2, M2A2 ODS (Operation Desert Storm improvements), and M2A3. Their primary mission is to securely transport an infantry squad, accommodating up to six passengers, to critical locations. Beyond transporting mechanized infantry into close proximity with the enemy, the M2 can deliver covering fire to dismounted infantry. It boasts adequate armor protection against small arms fire and artillery, and its TOW missiles enable it to engage any vehicle on the battlefield.
The Bradley engine was upgraded to a 275hp turbocharged Detroit Diesel Turbo Diesel 6V53T.
The Bradley transmission was upgraded to a new Allison X200-4A 4-speed automatic transmission.
BradleyA4 Family
The A4 generation of the Bradley family of vehicles is a major upgrade for the Bradley variants. The BradleyA4 was developed by BAE Systems for the US Army addressing the areas of capability and mobility. An upgraded powerpack with an aftercooled 350hp Detroit Diesel 6V53TA engine. A variable speed hydraulically driven cooling fan was added to the engine. Capability was improved by extending the length of the vehicle.
Other entities have also developed their own BradleyA4 upgrades. The most prevalent of these is the BradleyA4+ upgrade developed by the Turkish company FNSS.

Bradley Engine Oil
Detroit Diesel 6V53 and 6V53 Two-Stroke Engine Oil
Vehicles from the Bradley Family powered by the Detroit Diesel 6V53 Family of engines required critical attention to the lubrication oil used in the engine. Over the many decades that the 6V53, 6V53N and 6V53T engines that can power the Bradley, Detroit Diesel, the US Army and NATO have regularly updated the specification of the engine oil to be used. The Oil Manufacturers have also developed new products and new standards during this time for the available oils. The Technical Manuals (TMs) for the Bradley and 6V53 Engines have been changed several times with the engine oil specification and these manuals are not synchronous in their recommendation. To make matters worse, different operating users have also adopted different standards.
The engine oil for a Bradley vehicle is critical because the detroit diesel two-stroke engine is a high-rpm design with "loose" clearances on its internal moving parts. Further, the engine is susceptible to very and very high ambient temperatures. Engines operating in ambient temperatures above 90F can be likely to fail when the engine oil is not optimized for the engine. The original manufacturer (OEM) Detroit Diesel have developed their own specification of oil particularly for their two-stroke diesel engines.
MTU (Detroit Diesel) Recommended Two-Stroke Engine Oil

MTU states that for 53 Series Engines such as the 6V53, that Single-Grade SAE 40 Oil is recommended for all temperatures. Single-Grade SAE 50 Oil and Multi-Grade 15W-40 Oil may be used, but only for SHORT PERIODS in cold conditions and NOT in hot conditions when the coolant outlet temperature is more than 94 Celsius (201 F).

US Army and NATO Specifications from Technical Manuals
There are many Technical Publications from the US Army and NATO for the Bradley Family of vehicles and within those publications and their various editions (changes) there are multiple specifications for engine oil. In fact, none of these manuals match the OEM's recommendations, but here is a curated list of specifications from the latest editions of the manuals.

Our Opinion on 6V53 Engine Oil for the Bradley Series
After exhaustive testing of engines in our computerized test dyno cells and evaluation of engine cores that we have received over the years for rebuilding, we can conclude that the MTU Specifications are correct. Single-Grade 40 Weight (40W) oil provides the best performance, fuel-economy and reliability on Detroit Diesel 53 Series Engines.
The only exception being when a vehicle is operated for extended periods below -18C (0F) where the engine coolant outlet temperature rarely rises above 165F. 30W Oil does optimize oil pressure and flow rates at extremely low artic temperatures. Oil Change frequency must also increase in cold conditions as the oil will absorb moisture and not evaporate the moisture when its temperature is below the boiling point of water, 100C (212F). The oil sump heater kit can be installed on the Bradley to pre-heat the oil to minimize water absorption during storage and maximize moisture evaporation during cold weather running.
While MIL-PRF-46167 compliant Single-Grade oils offer the same performance as the commercial brand products recommended by MTU, the MTU Approved commercial brands do run cleaner within the engine over extended periods with improved moisture rejection and reduced tarnish, varnish and sludging than MIL-PRF-46167 oil.
The engines should be inspected to ensure that the correct thermostat is installed according to the latest OEM Specifications. For example, the 5063-5299 6V53N Normally-Aspirated Engine ( 2815-00-124-5390 / 2815-01-295-7458 ) of the Bradley and Bradley and the 5063-5396 6V53T Turbocharged Engine ( 2815-01-045-9420) should have thermostat part number 23503828 installed with an opening temperature of 165F. The 5063-5393 6V53T Turbo Engine (2815-01-248-7644) used on early Bradley and the 5063-539L 6V53T Turbo Engine (2815-01-412-2715) used on later Bradley and updated Bradley should have a thermostat part number 23503825 installed with an opening temperature of 180F.
