The AbilityOne® Program was established in 1938 and is administered by the Committee for Purchase From People Who Are Blind or Severely Disabled, an independent federal agency operating as the US AbilityOne Commission®. More than 45,000 people across the USA who are blind or have other significant disabilities are employed and trained by the program. AbilityOne sells SKILCRAFT® and other products and services to the US Federal Government and the US Armed Services.

What is AbilityOne®?

The AbilityOne® Program is a preferred source of supplies for US Federal Employees.

AbilityOne® authorized enterprises:

  • National Industries for the Blind (NIB)
  • SourceAmerica (formerly National Industries for the Severely Handicapped)
serve as the administering nonprofit agencies and distribute orders among nonprofit agencies that are AbilityOne® authorized providers.

The AbilityOne® Program benefits the US Federal Government and US Taxpayers by providing:

  • Reduced paperwork and pre/post award costs
  • Central points of contact to solve problems/facilitate action
  • Reduced reliance on disability programs and increased tax revenues
People who are blind or have significant disabilities receive training and are employed in the provision of products and services for the US Federal Government and US Military. Nonprofit agencies operating as AbilityOne® authorized providers must produce quality supplies and services for the US Federal Government at reasonable prices while maintaining a ratio of 75% direct labor employees who are blind or have other significant disabilities.

  • Nonprofit organizations that employ people who are blind or have other significant disabilities on AbilityOne contracts.

AbilityOne® Statistics

  • Employs more than 45,000 people who are blind or have significant disabilities.
  • Employs more than 3,200 veterans, including wounded warriors.
  • Provides SKILCRAFT® and other AbilityOne® products.
  • Operates at more than 1,000 locations, representing 40 government agencies, in all 50 states, Guam and Puerto Rico.
  • Operates more than 150 Base Supply Centers at military and government installations.
  • Coordinates participation from approximately 500 nonprofit agencies nationwide.
  • Nearly $4 billion of AbilityOne products and services were procured by the federal government in fiscal year 2020.
  • The largest customer is the Department of Defense, which annually procures more than $2.3 billion of AbilityOne® products and services.
